Spring is my favourite season for walks, it is not very warm but it is quite warmer than the previous season. In Bulgaria there are so many beautiful and wild places to have a walk that it is sometimes hard to choose. This time we are going to a small village in Iskar Gorge – Zasele. It is located on the top of Skaklya rock krown – a stunning karst gap with the famous Skaklya waterfalls. This place was a favourite of the Bulgarian writer and poet Ivan Vazov and the eco-path here is named after him. Now I will try to re-create the views from Zasele and to take you in the world of green and lilacs.
Zlio Kamik (Evil rock) – a place with stunning view
Zlio Kamik (Evil rock) is a mountainous area described in one of Ivan Vazov’s works. To reach it you need first to drive to Tserovo village and the take the small road to Zasele. After you pass the stone fountain you will see a small lay-by where you can leave your car. 50 m down by a nice path you will reach a small meadow with a bench. From there you can enjoy the stunning beautiful view to Gara Bov village and Iskar river. This is, I suppose, Zlio Kamik. Here we waited to see the biggest steam locomotive in Bulgaria – Baba Metsa.

Skaklya waterfalls – the end of the Vazova eco-path
We spent an hour or two on the bench and headed to the end of the Vazova eco-path and Skaklya waterfalls. This waterfall is very popular among Bulgarian tourists and there are two ways to go there. First one is from Gara Bov village which is easily reachable by train from Sofia – an hour ride. It is a relatively easy path up to the waterfalls and if you are enthusiastic you can continue up to Zasele. The other way is from Zasele village. It is very easy to go down to the waterfalls but the way back is hard. If you are traveling by train you have no problem – you can just go down and take the train back from Gara Bov. But if you came by car you will probably need to go back for it.

Bovska Skaklya is a waterfall on Zaselska river, as high as 120 m. It is beautiful but not “working” all the time. Spring is the beast time to see it as in the summer it dries out.
Views from Zasele
After your walk you can have a nice meal in Zasele village. If you still have power you can try the other eco-path in the area – Pod Kamiko, from Gara Bov to the village of Bov.
