What do you imagine when you hear White Sand? Well, no matter how hard we try to imagine anything else, we always see a seaside picture with beautiful white beach (like the Marble Beach on Thassos island, for example). And even though we know that this wine, named White Sand, does not come from the seaside, we could not resist and too it to the sea.
We found no better place to open the bottle of Whithe Sand than the white wooden veranda in front of the trailer of a friend. We had not seen each other for years but we hadn’t lost the enthusiasm for adventures together. We opened the bottle and the spirit of the white sand filled our afternoon with aromas, memories and dreams.
White Sand from Zlaten Rozhen and where the white sand comes from?
The White Sand is a wonderful wine from Zlaten Rozhen winery – white in colour but not so white in terms of origin. The name is probably related to the terroir of this wine – the sandy soils in the Sandanski-Petrich valley in Southwestern Bulgaria.
White Sand is a part of the Family Reserve series, a very interesting wine entirely of the Broadleaved Melnik variety – indigenous grape for this part of Bulgaria. It was made by the Blanc de Noir technology – white wine from red grapes. We have always found the Blanc de Noir very interesting and recognizable. They have fresh fruity aromas but are still voluminous and fuller, reminding of their origin.
Every time we are very enthusiastic to taste such wines. They are not very common but there are a few wineries in Bulgaria that make them. If you are interested, write us an email to ask for ideas. Now let’s talk about the White Sand.
Tasting notes about the White Sand
The colour is white, sparkling, almost transparent white gold colour with light greenish notes. The aromas are rather floral than fruity. We find white flowers, avocado, white pepper and butter. The feeling in the mouth is round, full, but still juicy.
Pairing White Sand with food
We would love to enjoy the White Sand even without food, but also with salad or light cheeses. This wine is a great starter for big events or just as a start of the evening with friends. In this seaside day we paired it with grilled steelhead (or salmon trout). And somehow, without any tension or too much effort, we brought together the sands of Southwestern Bulgaria, the salty air of the southern Black Sea coast and the fish, grown somewhere else in Bulgaria.
